FAQ
What is No-Gi Jiu Jitsu?
No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is grappling without the traditional kimono (gi). Instead of relying on cloth grips, we train using body control, leverage, and positional strategy — skills that translate directly to real-world self-defense and MMA. The pace is faster, the movement is more dynamic, and the learning curve rewards creativity.
Is this the same as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Kind of — but not exactly.
Traditional BJJ is practiced in the gi, while 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu (founded by Eddie Bravo under Jean Jacques Machado) focuses entirely on the No-Gi side of the art. It’s still grounded in the same core principles, but adapted for modern grappling.
Who is the head coach?
Marshall Stamper, a 10th Planet black belt, founded 10th Planet Taipei after years of training across the U.S. and Asia. He brings a deep technical base, a focus on creativity, and a love for building authentic jiu jitsu culture — where people actually want to be on the mats together.
Do I need any experience to join?
Not at all. Most of our students start with zero background in martial arts.
Beginners are welcome in every class, and you’ll receive plenty of guidance as you learn the basics.
What should I wear for my first class?
Athletic shorts and a fitted T-shirt or rashguard are fine for your trial class.
After that, you’ll need proper No-Gi gear — shorts without pockets or zippers, and a rashguard. This helps prevent injuries and keeps the mats clean.
How do I start training?
Just message us or come by the gym for a free trial class.
We’ll introduce you to the space, go over some fundamentals, and pair you with a partner who matches your experience level.

Do you have classes in English or Mandarin?
Yes — both!
Instruction is primarily in English, but we often translate key details into Mandarin when needed. Our students come from Taiwan and around the world, so classes are international and friendly.
What’s the vibe like?
Relaxed, technical, and fun.
We train hard but leave egos at the door. Expect to be greeted, challenged, and encouraged — all in the same class.
Do you offer drop-ins or short-term memberships?
Yes.
We welcome travelers, visiting students, and anyone curious about No-Gi Jiu Jitsu. Contact us for current drop-in rates or short-term passes.
What’s the difference between 10th Planet and other schools?
10th Planet focuses exclusively on No-Gi — that means no fabric grips, no outdated hierarchy, and no rigid traditions. The system emphasizes adaptability, control, and submission chains that work in any environment. It’s also known for its open-minded, experimental culture.
What are the basic rules of etiquette?
Keep yourself and your gear clean, respect your training partners, and leave the mats better than you found them.
Full guidelines are listed in our Gym Etiquette section, but the short version is: be humble, be safe, be cool.
Do I have to compete?
Not at all.
Competition is optional — we focus on personal growth, physical fitness, and community. But if you want to test yourself, we’ll help you prepare and support you every step of the way.
